Mutter 51 Cogl segfault on hybrid graphics (Intel Core Ultra + NVIDIA RTX 4060, Optimus)

PendingBug1 votes0 commentsby Cycledoc675

Booting in BIOS Hybrid Graphics mode on an HP Omen Transcend 14 results in a black screen. GDM retries 6 times before giving up and terminating. The system only boots successfully when forced into iGPU-only mode in BIOS.

Log Analysis & Core Dump Stack Trace

  1. Mutter 51.0 Cogl Segfault (SIGSEGV Signal 11): kernel: gnome-shell[4100]: segfault at 0 ip 00007f66f06517c4 error 4 in libmutter-cogl-51.so.0.0.0[a87c4,7f66f05bb000+ae000] Stack trace: #0 0x00007f66f06517c4 cogl_renderer_is_hardware_accelerated (libmutter-cogl-51.so.0 + 0xa87c4) #1 (libmutter-51.so.0 + 0x22e66b) #9 meta_context_setup (libmutter-51.so.0) #10 gnome-shell (+ 0x2767)
  2. Secondary Packaging Regression (nvidia-modprobe SUID): /usr/bin/nvidia-modprobe was shipped without the SUID bit (-rwxr-xr-x instead of -rwsr-xr-x), causing (udev-worker): nvidia: Process '/usr/bin/nvidia-modprobe -c0 -u' failed with exit code 1. (Restoring SUID manually via chmod u+s resolved the udev failure, exposing the downstream Mutter 51 Cogl crash).

Bug report

Steps to reproduce

  1. Enable Hybrid / Dynamic Graphics in BIOS on an HP Omen Transcend 14 (Intel Core Ultra 7 + RTX 4060).
  2. Boot into PikaOS.
  3. Observe boot progression past rEFInd and Plymouth splash screen.
  4. Screen turns pitch black with a hanging text cursor; GDM login screen never renders.

Expected behavior

GDM should launch the Wayland greeter cleanly across both GPUs, allowing graphical login in Hybrid mode.

Actual behavior

gnome-shell (Mutter 51.0) segfaults on startup during EGL/Cogl context initialization. GDM retries 6 times in 7 seconds and shuts down completely.

Environment

  • Hardware: HP Omen Transcend 14 (2024)
  • CPU/iGPU: Intel Core Ultra 7 155H (Meteor Lake / i915-xe driver)
  • dGPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU (NVIDIA Open Driver 595.104.02)
  • OS: PikaOS (Rolling Release)
  • Compositor: Mutter 51.0 / GNOME Shell
